The State University of New York (SUNY) Cortland engaged our team, in association with Nelson, to design a new Student Life Center that serves as the focal point for campus life. This dynamic facility combines recreation, dining, social, and meeting spaces to create a central hub where students can connect, engage, and participate in a variety of activities. The two-story building is organized into two wings with a central lobby and entrances on both sides, providing easy access to all areas of the center.

The north wing of the building houses the food service area, the Outdoor Pursuits program, and a retail store, while the south wing is dedicated to student recreation space and administrative offices. A central concourse runs through the building, connecting the two wings and leading directly to the two-level fitness center, swimming pool, gymnasium, and multi-purpose spaces. A monumental stair provides access to the second level, where students can enjoy a range of activities. At the end of the concourse, a 40-foot climbing wall offers an exciting challenge for students looking to push their limits.

One of the signature features of the facility is the three-lane, 1/5-mile suspended jogging track, which includes a 20-inch grade change to mimic hills. This ADA-accessible track wraps around the perimeter of the facility, providing exterior views in all four directions and interior views into every major space, including a glass tunnel that passes through the pool area. The track offers a unique and dynamic indoor running experience, catering to students during the colder months when outdoor running is not feasible. The building also showcases stunning exterior views of the mountains, woodlands, and the surrounding campus, creating an inspiring and connected environment for all who use the facility.
