SLU Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Building

Saint Louis University’s new Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering (ISE) Building serves as a dynamic hub for innovation and collaboration at the heart of the university’s newly established science quad. Designed to foster cutting-edge research and hands-on learning, the three-story facility integrates flexible lab spaces and modern teaching environments that support a wide range of disciplines, including bioinformatics, biology, biomedical engineering, chemistry, neuroscience, and computer science. The building features a striking three-story atrium, 10,000 square feet of dedicated research space, and an active learning classroom that accommodates up to 210 participants. Formal and informal collaboration areas further enhance the interdisciplinary nature of the space, encouraging interaction among students and faculty.

The ISE Building is home to several specialty research groups that drive advancements in their respective fields. The Center for Additive Manufacturing focuses on pioneering developments in 3D printing and advanced fabrication techniques. The Taylor Geospatial Institute supports research in spatial data analysis and mapping, while the Center for Digital Humanities explores the intersection of technology and historical scholarship. Additionally, the Water Access, Technology, Environment, and Resources (WATER) Institute is dedicated to addressing global challenges related to water sustainability and management. These institutes contribute to SLU’s mission of interdisciplinary discovery and problem-solving.

With a commitment to sustainability, the project team designed the ISE Building to achieve LEED Silver certification, incorporating energy-efficient systems and environmentally responsible materials. This achievement underscores the university’s dedication to creating high-performance academic spaces that not only enhance the student learning experience but also minimize environmental impact. The ISE Building stands as a testament to Saint Louis University’s investment in the future of science, engineering, and research, providing a state-of-the-art environment where students and faculty can collaborate, innovate, and push the boundaries of knowledge.
