Scottsdale USD Cherokee Elementary School Replacement

The Scottsdale USD Cherokee Elementary School replacement project transformed an aging campus into a modern, student-centered learning environment. The redesign included the removal of outdated structures and construction of new classroom buildings, a gymnasium, cafeteria, and administrative spaces. Site improvements such as a new parking lot, extended queuing lane, and a designated drop-off zone enhanced traffic flow and safety during pick-up and drop-off times. Utility infrastructure was upgraded throughout the campus to support the new facilities and future needs.

One of the most distinctive features of the new school is a real school bus creatively repurposed into an interactive reading space within the library, inspired by the Junie B. Jones book series. This imaginative element adds a playful and memorable experience for students, encouraging curiosity and a love of reading. The library itself is designed as a dynamic hub for exploration and learning, with flexible spaces that support both independent study and collaborative activities.

Driven by a community-wide visioning process, the project emphasized a strong connection to nature. The original facility lacked natural light and access to the outdoors, so biophilic design principles were prioritized in the new layout. Expansive windows, views to the outside, and the incorporation of natural materials help create a healthy and inspiring indoor environment.

Three outdoor classrooms form the heart of the new campus, each landscaped with native plants representing local biomes. These spaces serve as hands-on learning environments, promoting environmental literacy and offering students and teachers flexible areas for instruction, reflection, and creative exploration. Together, these design elements contribute to a school that is not only functional and forward-thinking but also deeply connected to its community and natural surroundings.
