James Madison University Recreation Center is a dynamic, state-of-the-art facility that supports the health, wellness, and social engagement of the university’s growing student population. Originally built to serve 12,500 students, the expanded center now accommodates nearly 20,000, offering significantly enhanced spaces for fitness, recreation, and holistic well-being.

The addition includes weight, fitness, and cardio areas that are over twice the size of the original, five flexible group fitness studios, two multi-activity courts, a two-court recreation gym, and a 1/6-mile, four-lane indoor running track. New amenities also include a wellness suite, outdoor adventure area with a climbing wall, and an instructional pool with a current channel and whirlpool.

The spa—now four times larger—features natural elements like rocks and a waterfall to promote relaxation. Other highlights include a demonstration kitchen, massage and personal training spaces, and a large instructional room equipped with cutting-edge technology for classes and events.

Certified LEED Silver, the facility incorporates sustainable practices such as recycled turf, reused field lighting, native materials, and ample natural light to support environmental stewardship.
