Eli Witt Cigar Factory Renovation
The Eli Witt Cigar Factory Building, built in the 1920s, is a two-story structure with a rich history. Throughout the years, it has served various purposes, including as a service station, grocery store, and a distribution center for the Eli Witt Cigar Company. Located in a growing area, the building stands out amidst the surrounding development. Despite the changes around it, preserving its historic charm and character was essential.
The building was originally designed in the Mediterranean Revival style, and that look played a big role in shaping the renovation. Wherever possible, original features were repaired instead of replaced to maintain the building’s character. When updates were needed, the new materials were chosen to closely match the old ones in look and feel. The storefront was redesigned using aluminum framing with brick and glass details, recessed to allow for outdoor dining while still fitting in with the historic style. The exterior was repainted, and the original barrel and glazed roof tiles were carefully preserved.
Inside, the building was updated to support modern use while still honoring its past. The interior layout now includes a reception area, private offices, a flexible multi-purpose room, and a breakroom with a kitchenette. Mechanical, electrical, and fire protection systems were all upgraded to current standards, but done in a way that didn’t take away from the building’s historic character.
The project has been recognized for its thoughtful approach to historic preservation. In 2024, it received the Meritorious Achievement Award from the Florida Trust for Historic Preservation for its careful restoration and adaptive reuse of a significant historic structure.
