Denison University Mitchell Center Expansion and Renovation

The Mitchell Center Expansion and Renovation at Denison University involved a comprehensive upgrade of the campus's athletic facilities to support the university’s high level of student athletic participation. With approximately 2,100 students enrolled, nearly 1,200 take part in athletic and club teams, and over 1,500 participate in intramurals. The project was designed to enhance the athletic experience for the entire student body while modernizing and expanding the existing complex.

The renovation reorganized four interconnected buildings originally constructed between 1951 and 1995, which house physical education, athletics, recreation, and training spaces. The most significant component of the addition is a new 50-meter competition pool with a separate diving tank, athletic lockers, and offices located on the lower level. The main level includes a multi-purpose meeting space, balcony seating for 1,000 spectators, a new entry and lobby, and hall of fame displays, all connecting to the performance gymnasium, 200-meter field house, and new natatorium.

To further improve the facility’s functionality, the original pool was repurposed into a modern fitness center, featuring free weights, weight machines, and cardio equipment on a mezzanine built above the former spectator area. In recognition of its sustainable design and construction practices, the project achieved LEED Gold Certification.

Project Size: 121,000 SF

Location: Granville, OH

The indoor track encircles a set of tennis courts, allowing multiple sports to train and compete simultaneously. This versatile indoor setup supports year-round use, regardless of weather conditions.

The indoor natatorium includes a 50-meter pool with lap lanes for training and meets, along with a separate diving area equipped with low boards for recreational use.
