Colorado State University Center for the Arts Thrust Theater

Fort Collins, Colorado

Colorado State University’s new 300-seat Thrust Theater was built within the gymnasium of a local landmark, the old Fort Collins High School Gymnasium.

Designing within the existing framework capitalized on the structurally sound shell, thus reducing construction costs. This resulted in the creation of modern performance, rehearsal, and shop spaces with a modest budget. This facility features 180°tiered seating and an elongated stage platform that provides an intimate engagement between the audience and actors. The theater also includes a trapped stage and stage house with rigging capability.

The Thrust Theater is part of a larger integrated complex that shares a common lobby and circulation area adjoining the Edna Rizley Griffin Concert Hall. The innovative design of this facility has helped fulfill the university’s vision as a center for excellence for arts, education, research and outreach. This project was in association with SlaterPaull Architects.
