Arizona State University Health Services Building

Arizona State University’s enrollment grew from 23,400 students in 1968 to more than 60,000, making it the largest university in the country. During that time, the Student Health Center remained unchanged. As patient volumes and service demands increased, the facility’s outdated structure became a barrier to efficient healthcare delivery, leading to longer wait times, reduced patient throughput, and dissatisfaction among patients and staff.

To address these challenges, we partnered with Lake|Flato Architects to expand the facility by 9,000 SF. The design vision for the ASU Health Services Building focused on creating an inviting, student-centered destination that promotes wellness within an efficient, functional, and timeless environment.

Drawing on best practices from today’s leading healthcare markets, the project incorporated concierge services, electronic and social media alerts, personalized patient sequencing, and hospitality-driven operational strategies. A central concierge desk welcomes and guides patients to their respective clinics, serving as a key wayfinding node connecting both traditional and alternative treatment spaces. The high-volume lobby, filled with natural light, offers digital and print resources that encourage wellness and healthy living.

Today, the ASU Student Health Center provides a world-class wellness facility that meets the current and future health needs of students while complementing the historic campus context.

Project Size: 9,000 SF

Location: Tempe, AZ

The reception desk is designed to create a welcoming and approachable first impression for students. Its open layout and warm finishes help create a sense of comfort, ease, and trust upon arrival.

Exam rooms are thoughtfully designed to create a calming and restorative environment, helping to support healing and comfort. Soft colors, natural light, and carefully selected finishes contribute to a peaceful, soothing atmosphere.
